Death Date: 14 Jul 1703, age: 86
Death Place: Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts

The immigrant ancestor of nearly all persons in North America bearing the surname Bigelow in any of its several variants, is John Biglo of Watertown, Massachusetts. He lived from 1617 to 1703. Many of his descendants have been recorded in a genealogy entitled The Bigelow Family in America, written by Gilman Bigelow Howe, printed 1890. The book was published by Charles Hamilton of Boston, and is no longer available except by photo-copy reprint. Rebound used copies occasionally come into the used-book market with the simple title Bigelow Genealogy.

In this book Howe states that he was unable to obtain any satisfactory account of the progenitor of John Biglo, and quotes conflicting traditions stating that the surname is of various national origins. He also quotes the late genealogist H.G. Somerby, who felt that John Biglo came from Wrentham, Suffolk, England, and was son of Randall and Jane Beageley, who had their youngest son, John, baptized 16 February 1617. Also, from the probate records of Wrentham, Somerby quotes the will of a Francis Baguley, blacksmith, of Wrentham, who in a will dated 20 October 1656, granted five pounds "to his brother John Baguley, now living in New England, if he comes for it within two years". He offered no proof that Francis was son of Randall Baguley.

The rector of Wrentham parish in 1617 was the Rev. John Phillips, who later emigrated to Dedham, Massachusetts. During his years in Dedham, Phillips once stated that the blacksmith John Biglo of Watertown, Massachusetts was the same infant whom he had baptized in 1617 as the son of Randall Beageley, and that he (Phillips) had "known John Biglo from earliest youth upward','

Further, in a civil case in Watertown during his lifetime, John Biglo took the witness stand and identified himself as "John Biglo, formerly of Wrentham, England." From these facts we state the identity and parentage of John Biglo, and through parish and probate records in England, can prove three generations of his English ancestry.

John Biglo seems to have arrived in Watertown, MA about 1632. He probably came with an older relative, Elizabeth Bigelow, second wife of Deacon Richard Butler, who after a short stay in Massachusetts, followed the Rev. Thomas Hooker to Connecticut. It is assumed that Elizabeth was an older sister or first cousin. No ship's-records exist showing the date of their arrival. It is probable that John Biglow and/or Mary Warren came over on one of the ships of the Winthrop Fleet.

John Biglo took part in the Pequot War of 1636, serving from Watertown. The next public mention we find of him is his marriage in Watertown on 30 October 1642-- the first marriage recorded in Watertown--before Mr. Nowell, to Mary Warren, daughter of John and Margaret Warren. Ella Biglow's book, Reminiscences of Historic Marlborouqh, MA, contains a fictional description of John at his wedding, in white satin breeches, ruffled shirt, and silver shoe buckles. There is also a docu-drama book called The Winthrop Woman, that is very well researched. On page 250, there is related a cannon-ball pitching contest between Will Hallet and "his opponent -- Bigelow, the blacksmith." The contest was held in the Common of "little Boston", on Election Day in the mid to late 1630's. The book relates the life of Elizabeth, a grand-daughter of John Winthrop, and a passenger on one of the ships of the same Winthrop Fleet.

To quote from Howe's book, "from the list of those who took the oath of fidelity at Watertown 1652, we find that John Biggalough was one of the number, and he became a freeman 18 April 1690 which we find from the roll of freeman written as John Bigolo; under the same date we find that Samuel Begaloo was made a freeman, and by another list, date 16 May 1690, we find Samuel Biggilo and John Warren Jr. were made freemen. On the return of soldiers who were in the service from 25 November to 3 December 1675 [King Philip's War]we find the names of John Bigulah Sr, Michael Flegg, and Isaac Leonard, the last being wounded. Thus we find the name variously spelled by different officials, but when we find the name written by any member of the family, in those early days it is written Biglo, Bigelo, or Bigelow." Follow links: soldiers and battles for listings and details of King Philip's War.

John Biglo appears by various accounts to have been a blacksmith, and again from town records we quote: "Agreed with John Biglo that for ten trees the towne allowed him for the setting up of a shop for a Smithes forge, that he shall either go on with his promise of setting up his trade, which is the trade of a Smith, within one twelfmonth after the date hereof or else to pay unto the towne ten shillings for these ten trees he acknowledged to have off the towne." Dated 4 March 1651.

John Biglo was chosen a surveyor of highways in 1652 and 1660, a constable [Tax-collector] in 1663, and one of the selectmen or town council, in 1665, 1670, and 1671. His homesite consisted of six acres and was bounded north by Richard Ambler and William Parker, east by Thomas Straight, south by the highway, and on the west by Miles Ives After the death of his wife Mary in 1691, he married (2) on 2 October 1694, Sarah Bemis, daughter of Joseph Bemis. She outlived him. He died on 14 July 1703, at he age of 86 years, as recorded in town records. His will was dated 4 January 1703 and was proved 23 July 1703

Joshua 2 BIGELOW, sixth child and fifth son. Joshua served in the colonial engagement known as King Phillip's War, as a member of Capt. Ting's company. He was wounded, and as a result was given a grant of land in Narragansett No. 2, which we know as Westminister, MA. However, Joshua continued to live in Watertown until his last few years, the grant passing to his son Eleizer. See also Bodge's volume on the colonial wars.
Joshua was appointed executor of his father's will, along with his brother in law Isaac LARNED. In return for which he received a larger share of his father's estate than did his brothers and sisters. He appears to have been well known in his lifetime.
Howe's Bigelow Family in America says that "in his 87th year, being anxious to reside on the land he had earned at the peril of his life", Joshua removed to Westminister with his son Eleizer, and lived there until his death on 01 February 1745. He outlived all his brothers and sisters save Abigail (BIGELOW) HARRINGTON.
Joshua and Elizabeth (FLAGG) BIGELOW had twelve children, all born Watertown

This might be a good time to bring up the numbering system used by The Bigelow Society in its' publications. Basically, John BIGLO (immigrant ancestor) is #1 and his children are numbered as in what order they were born, etc. Such as:

1 John BIGLO
16 Joshua(2) BIGELOW being the sixth child, second generation.
161 Joshua(3) first child, third generation.
162 Jonathan(3) second child
163 Lieut. John
164 Benjamin
165 Jabez
166 Elizabeth

167 David
168 Joseph
169 Daniel
16A Ebenezer, "A" is used for the tenth child

Death Place: Bloomfield, Somerset, Maine
Burial Place: Skowhegan, Maine

Migrated to Maine’s Kennebec Valley after the Revolutionary War. Family tradition says that this James was son of a roving man, and that little was known of him, or what became of him. Therefore, we assume this father to be James- 1625, the only Bigelow of the period whose dates, place of residence, and lack of definite information fit the case.
James Bigelow was taken by a family of another surname when very young. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the army in the French and Indian War, serving to its close. He again entered the service on 19 Apr 1775, in Col. Doolittle's Regt, and served at length during the entire Revolutionary War. He never collected either bounty or pension. On 31 Nov 1762 at Brookline, MA he married Mary Sawyer, her parents not given, born Kittery, ME 29 Oct 1740. They settled at Templeton, Worcester county, MA, where all their children were born. In 1786 they emigrated to the Kennebec Valley in Maine, then an unbroken wilderness, and settled the new town of Bloomfield, now Part of Skowhegan. Mary died there 29 May 1817; James on 27 Jan 1829. Bigelow Mountain in Maine appears to get its name from James. Frank Vining BIGELOW-33035; Frank said his branch of the family went up to the state of Maine, perhaps because his great great great grandfather James Bigelow had been up there with a regiment of the Massachusetts Militia. James was a Major and his job was to incept the British on their way down from Quebec to attack Fort Ticonderoga and then to NY. Unfortunately, the "old boy" got lost and climbed up what is now known as Mount Bigelow in Maine to try to find out where the British were. He took up the rear so they could not retreat back to Quebec and that was the end of the British Army of Invasion. There is a small town nearby Bigelow Mountain with a population of about 300 (?). Frank said he had to turn back to find the place because he had gone through the town and didn't know it. One of his family, according to Aunt "Carrie" took off for California and prospected for gold and struck it rich, perhaps he "put it in the Bigelow Bank of Ogden, Utah." Frank's grandmother had told him of an "Aunt Bell" in Oakland CA. Some names listed in Mother Lothrop and Aunt Carrie's album were: Maxwell; Ford; Aretta Bell; Wing/ Foss; Ladd; Atwood; Chapman and Knowles."
His letter was to Laurel Bigelow Barklow, Rte. 2, Bx. 450, Ontario, Oregon. Source: Charles C. Bigelow, brother, 7225 S. W. 53rd Court, Miami, FL 33143, Sep 24, 1972. He became a member of the Sons of the American Revolution in Washington, DC, in Connecticut #4231 through General David Humphrey's Branch. See DAR Vol 138 #137879.

"The Bigelows were generally tall in stature, but George's family exceeded them all. He had two girls who were nearly six feet. There were nine sons: Aholiab the oldest was six foot four inches and perhaps more. Joseph was nearly as tall and it was said that the aggregate height of the eleven was sixtyeight feet, or an average of six feet two inches, girls included. The average weight was over two hundred pounds." - Gilman Bigelow Howe. Genealogy of the Bigelow Family. 18904
With his parents he came to Skowhegan, ME at a time (circa 1781) when the Kennebec Valley was unbroken wilderness. He married, at unknown date, Mary Clark, of whom we have no information. They lived in the township of Bloomfield, ME, where he died 22 May 1855, "an honest and upright man."

Was apparently part of a larger wave of migration from Skowhegan, ME to Buda, IL: “There is no record or tradition of its having suffered from the “Ohio Fever” of 1817 and the years following. [...]7 the Quite a company from Bloomfield removed at the same time to Buda, Ill: Joseph B. Webb, son of James, woh married Martha Weston, daughter of Stephen, and went with his family in 1851; Joseph Weston, son of John, who married Hannah Webb, sister of Joseph B.; Alexander Jewett, son of Joshua, and , it is said, two or three of his sisters; Aholiab Bigelow, son of George. Eben Weston went to Buda for a few years, then farther west to Colorado. William H. Bigelow, son of George 2nd, lived for a while in Buda. Carpenter in Bureau Cty. Illinois, after leaving Maine. Not resident in Maine for 1840 census.”
My father is currently undertaking the preservation of the grave stone of Aholiab Bigelow, which we unearthed at the Buda, IL cemetery several years ago.

Moon in the Black Hills area of South Dakota, just outside of what is now Rapid City. 12 Moved to Woodbury Cty. section 33, Liberty township in spring, 1869 (possibly 1868) with Squire Haviland12. Originally bought ca. 200 acres but by 1900 owned 1,600 acres all in one body and well cultivated. Planted 700 acres of corn in 1900. Built tentant housing on part of land and rents out some. Change by source, Mary Boyce, of TN and research by grandaughter,
Cordelia (16251.3726), which would make the name, Tinkham Ariel Bigelow.
Pioneer Settler, 93 years old, lived full life of adventure. Ariel Tinkum Bigelow has been county resident for 60 years. By Beatrice S. Painter,
Special Correspondent, The Journal. Elk Point, SD.
Ariel Tinkum Bigelow, one of the oldest pioneers of Iowa and South Dakota recently celebrated his 93rd birthday anniversary. He has been
a resident of Woodbury co. 66 years, and has dwelt in IA 70 years. He homesteaded near a natural spring near Rapid City, SD., not far from the spot the Coolidges spent a summer vacation, in 1928. He has owned plantations in Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi and has the honor of having shown 100 head of thoroughbred stock at the first fair held in Woodbury co. (see below)
When he arrived in Sioux City, in 1859, there was only a village, consisting of about three blocks of log cabins and frame buildings. At that
time only two buildings were standing where Salix now stands, and of the 150 people then residing in Onaway, (Onawa, Monona Cty) only one besides himself now is living. Yet, despite his age and life of thrilling adventure and many hardships, Mr. Bigelow goes about his daily occupations with a firm tread, upright carriage, clear eyes, firm unwrinkled skin, and wonderful mental vigor. Looking at him, it is hard to realize his age is so near the century mark, for with a weight of 200 pounds and a height of more than six feet, always well groomed, he would pass for a man of middle age. He never is ill, never has worn glasses, yet is a great reader, needs no cane and never has known rheumatism.
A year ago Mr. Bigelow had three ribs broken, and a Sioux City physician who treated him at that time, gave him a thorough examination and was
immensely surprised to find a man of his age so organically sound. He told Mr. Bigelow that, barring injury or death by accident, he should live at
least 20 more years.
Mr. Bigelow was born in Maine 8 Nov 1838 and when 6 years old, migrated with his parents to Illinois, going up rivers and lakes by steamboat to
Chicago and thence by canal boat muledrawn, to LaSalle, and from there across the prairie to Princeton, IL, where the family settled. When he was only 16 years old, his father, a carpenter, died, leaving him to support himself, his mother and two sisters. He went to work, and being "handy" never lacked employment. The next year he invested his savings in a part interest in a grain threshing outfit, and the following year was able to purchase it
outright. Then he purchased a farm, making a small down payment, and paying the balance in yearly installments.
In 1859, Mr. Bigelow started for Iowa, driving across country with 100 head of cattle and 50 head of horses. He settled near Onawa. However, after losing a number of head of cattle in the marshes, and finding it necessary to keep a team of horses ready at all times to pull the beasts out of the
mire, he decided to move on. This time he located at Salix, and purchased the 27 room hotel, now known as the Manona house.
ELOPES TO MARRY: In 1873 he and Sarah Beers eloped to Smithland, Iowa, and were married. When she died six years ago last Christmas Day,(2 May 1924) they had rounded out 60 years of wedded life. About the time of his marriage, he and a brother-in-law went into stock raising on an extensive scale. At the end of 14 years, the partners decided to try a new venture in the new west. They went to the Black Hills [about 1887-1888], overland, driving 500 head of cattle.
At Peno Springs, they found four wagon outfits, beside which lay the dead bodies of four young men, evidently brothers, who had been scalped. At this point, they met a wagon freight train guarded by soldiers and accompanied it the rest of the journey.
Upon the half section of land which they homesteaded near the present Rapid City, they built a log cabin, and for a number of years raised stock
there. In the meantime his wife continued to operate the farm at Salix, Iowa.
Note: The clipping says married 1873. Other papers say 1855. Oldest child born 1866.
Sarah Beers was born 1844 and married in 1865.
In 1884, Mr. Bigelow purchased and operated a store in Salix, but a fire destroyed the building and its contents. Fire on five occasions caused Mr. Bigelow great loss. In 1874 his farm residence burned down during the night, he and his family luckily escaping alive. In 1860 (1880?) fire destroyed his barn and several head of thoroughbred horses, and only five years ago the residence on his farm was destroyed by fire.
During the years immediately following the Civil War, Mr. Bigelow made many trips to markets in southern states with mules and horses, some of which he traded for farms and plantations. He has traveled in all sections of the United States, but still finds this section the best in which to reside.
Mr. Bigelow is the father of nine children, seven of whom are still living, has 20? grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Despite such a long adventurous life of his own, this hardy pioneer never tires of reading adventure and detective stories. When not at work at
chores around the farm, he can be found with a book or magazine in his hand, deeply engrossed in the thrills of fiction.”

He died at Salix, Woodbury co, IA 08 June 1932. He was born in Skowhegan, Maine 08 November 1838.
Sarah Beers was born at Salem, Washington co, NY 01 November 1844; died 22 December1924 at Salix.
Bigelow Society received this article 06 August 1974 from Mrs. E. H. Warrington, 6827 Shavellson, Houston, TX 77055.

SRL wrote in 2003: Their spread was called a ranch and it was along the ever changing course of the Missouri River. In fact, the land known as Bigelow Park remained in our family because of my great-great grandfather Ariel Tinkham Bigelow's craftiness in figuring out the shift of the river (based on his former knowledge as a surveyor). He came to Iowa as a "surveyor for the railroad". He also brought the first short horned cattle to the Northwest Territory. He also brought the first Percheron horses to that territory. He went to Scotland, purchased the livestock and traveled in steerage with the animals to bring them to the US. He was quite a character and lived to be 94 years old.

James Warren Markell died on Sunday, October 20, at Lakeland Nursing Facility in Elkhorn, WI, at the age of 100 years and 1 month of natural causes. He had lived in Elkhorn in the two years prior to his death. He is survived by his daughter Ora Markell Larson of Rockton, IL, and sons James Warren Markell, Elkhorn, WI, and John DeWitt Markell, Rockford, IL, as well as 11 grandchildren and 17 great grand children. He was preceeded in death by his wife Maxine Ruth Pike Markell, parents Ruel DeWitt and Mabel "Belle" Bigelow Markell, older brothers Frank and Harry Markell, a younger brother Keats Coe Markell, and infant sister. His daughters Arden Ann McLaughlin and Alice Kay Markell Plager Dyslin also preceded him in death.

Warren, as he was known to family and friends throughout his life, was born in Salix, Iowa on September 20, 1902, the third of five children. He grew up on farms in Salix and Oto, Iowa and in Wessington Springs and Elk Point, South Dakota. Warren worked in many family enterprises including farming, livestock and milk drayage. He was the only one of his brothers who was not present when the family milk truck was ambushed during South Dakota’s Milk Wars; his father, R.D. Markell, was killed in the attack and his brothers were all injured. Warren was eager to see the world riding the rails, working in threshing crews as well as becoming one of the first paper products salesmen for the Fort Howard Paper Company. During Prohibition he worked briefly for Al Capone, delivering liquor from Chicago to Sioux City, IA. A handsome man and an immaculate dresser, he was said to have been mistaken for the famous outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd on several occasions.

After marrying Maxine Pike in 1929 and working in livestock sales in Salix and Thief River Falls, MN, he found employment with a Sioux City firm that made parts for the new aerospace industry. When WWII broke out, Warren and his family moved to work for Lockheed in Glendale, California. Shortly after arrival in 1941, he was mistakenly diagnosed with a fatal heart ailment and sent home to Sioux City to spend what were assumed to be his few remaining months. The family later moved to Rockford, IL, where Warren was employed by Barber Colman for many years. After a short time selling cars for American Motors, Warren and Maxine retired to a farm in rural Harrison, IL, where he raised sheep. After his wife became ill, they moved to Rockton, IL, in 1971 and remained there until her death in 1978.

At the age of 76, when most of his contemporaries were very much retired, Warren relocated to Berkeley, CA, and embarked on a successful new career as the manager of a large apartment complex. He remained there until moving to Clear Lake, IA, with his second wife, the former Alpha Ritter in 1983. Faced with increasing ill health, he then moved back to Rockton, IL, to live with his daughter Ora until his condition precluded care in the family home.

Warren was a good husband, a loving father and grandfather and a kind and faithful friend. He was known for his wonderful storytelling, his fine voice and natural musical ability, his love of animals and cribbage, and his warm and friendly manner, which won him friends easily. He took each day as it came and seldom worried about the future. He came from a line of longevity: both of his grandfathers lived to be 86 and 94 years of age. Warren attributed his own longevity neither to genetics or clean living, but to having enjoyed the care and love of good women. He is loved and missed by all who were privileged to know him.

Warren will be not be buried in the Markell family plot in Graceland Cemetery in Sioux City, but in Willwood Cemetery in Rockford, IL, beside his wife Maxine and daughter Arden. A private graveside service will be held for the family.

As a 14-15 y/o girl, Marybelle was strong enough to do haying on the Markell property in Salix down by the river (former Bigelow land). She worked with the Sandersons, Mabel and her boy Art, “Fats”, friends of the family. She was able to “buck” or round off the top of the haystacks by herself.

SALIX, Iowa -- Mary Belle (Markell) Rogers, 81, of Spokane, Wash., formerly of Salix, Iowa, died peacefully Thursday, Nov. 23, 2006, at St. Joseph Care Center in Spokane after a brief but courageous battle with an undiagnosed malady.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday (time of mass pending) at Sacred Heart Church, 219 E. Rockwood Boulevard, Spokane, Wash. Memorial services will be 12:10 p.m. Thursday at St. Matthew's Church in Kalispell, Mont. Entombment will be in Glacier Memorial Cemetery, Kalispell. Arrangements are under the direction of Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home in Spokane.

Mary Belle was born May 9, 1925, at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City. She was the only child of Frank R. and Louise Margaret (Hildebrand) Markell. Mary Belle was the namesake of her maternal and paternal grandmothers, Mary and Belle. Her youth was spent in the farming community of Salix. She would often discuss life during the Depression era of rural Iowa, where her grandparents had emigrated and her parents engaged in farming, milk production and even "bootlegging," as she would tell. She spent much of her time swimming in Brown's Lake inside her grandfather, Tinkum Bigelow's donated parkland under the watchful eye of one of her Dalmatian dogs.

She was admitted directly into Briar Cliff College in Sioux City after her junior year at St. Joseph School in Salix under the then experimental Hutchinson Plan. After two years studying parks and recreation, she pursued a career that combined her passion for swimming and her gregarious nature taking a job with the Red Cross of Omaha, and the beginning of an extensive career, volunteer and state board member involved primarily with water safety and first aid, lasting more than 57 years until 2004 in Nebraska, Illinois and Montana.

She remained involved with her college studies as a board member and committee chair of the Illinois Association of Parks and Recreation and the Community House in St. Charles, Ill. She was actively involved with the Delnor Hospital Auxiliary, Marmion Military Academy's Mothers Association and the Pottawattamie Garden Club while residing in the Fox River Valley of Illinois. She once again pursued her passions in recreation and water safety running the family-owned KOA franchise on Montana’s Flathead Lake during the summertime for almost 30 years.

She provided unconditional support to her husband of 54 years, Logan, moving from Illinois to Idaho, Montana and finally Spokane, while maintaining her interests in Red Cross and recreation. She was devout in her faith, a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and remarkable conversationalist.

Survivors include her husband, J. Logan Rogers, MD; a son and only child, John Logan Rogers II and his wife, Judy Long Rogers; her only grandson, John Logan Rogers III; as well as numerous cousins in Iowa, Illinois, Colorado and Washington.

Donations may be made in her name to your local Chapter of the American National Red Cross or the charity of your choice.

Harry Markell, son of R. D. Markell, jumped from the Omaha fast train as
it passed through Hinton Saturday noon striking on his hands. Both
wrists were sprained and his hands were so badly cut and lacerated as to
require the service of a physician. He was taken to the office of Dr.
Robbins where his injuries were dressed and he will probably receive no
permanent injury.

Family nickname was “Runt”, as he was the youngest in the family, and “Unk” as an older man. Had a lifelong interest in dogs and horses. Swapped a violin that his mother had bought him, in hopes of encouraging his musical talents, for a puppy. Unk always thought he got the best part of the deal on that one. Had a football scholarship to the University of Nebraska in 1929, but came back to work with his folks on the farm, as hard times had set in. Later went to work in the steel mills in Colorado, where he met his wife Josephine and had his first daughter, Ruella. The marriage didn’t last, but they stayed in contact. Later, caught philandering with the sheriff’s wife, and given the option of serving time in that sheriff’s jail, or enlisting in the army, Unk headed off to war at the age of 32, about 10 years older than most of his fellow soldiers. He fought in WWII, first at the Battle of the Bulge. With the majority of his company dead, Unk was scheduled to go out with another, when, at the reployment depot, he heard his name over the loudspeaker. Turns out that a high school buddy turned officer recognized his name and they went out for a beer. Upon return, the duty officer was fighting mad and demanded to know why Unk was AWOL and wanted him thrown in the stockade. The officer friend calmed him down and explained what had happened and it was arranged for Unk to go with another unit later. A short time after that, the news came that the original until with which Unk should have been sent had been strafed and that there were no survivors of the attack.. Unk said his life was saved by a beer. As it would turn out, the same fellow who recognized Unk would later be liberated by him from Buchenwald, where he was held as a POW.

Unk served under Patton , primarily as a sniper. Liberated Buchenwald. Had an exterminating service in Shirland, Winnebago, Illinois whereby the nickname “Mousy” Markell. He raised and fought fighting cocks, as well as cutting horses. In his late 70’s he moved to Firesteel to raise wheat, which is where is wife “Toddy” died. As “Unk” himself put it, “I came down in the morning and there was Toddy on the kitchen floor, deader than hell. Had to step over her to make the coffee.” Social Security Card issued in California.
