The family records I have show that Henrich Merckel (Henrich Merki on 1742 bp rec) was probably born in germany 1695-1708, died circa 1781. m by 1742 to Sophrina Bucher (Frina Bucher on 1742 bp record) pr. m2 to ANNA 1742.. records say Henrich 1747 moved from Schoharie to Stone Arabia in about 1747,
The records i have also show that Henrich was son of Johannes Merckel b ca 1660-1690 d by 1717. The widow of Johannes Merckel with 2 sons listed on 1717 Simmendinger census of New Annsburg.
Henrich may have been a Tory (as were some of his sons; Jacob and Dietrich/Richard) but other sons remained in Stone Arabia after the war ended. I am decended from Henrich's son Deobald b 1729, m Maria Esther Ecker. Deobald (David/Gewalt) was listed in Klock's regiment (serving at Oriskany)
Searching for information on ancestry of Henrich Merckel/Markell b. ca 1695 ?Germany/Alsace/Switzerland, place of origin not yet located, or in Hank Z. Jones books on the Palatines of New York. Not as reported by earlier researchers, a son of the Christoph Friedrich Merckel of Ulster Co., NY. Apparently not connected to those at Schoharie either. Lived Stone Arabia, Montgmery Co., NY after 1740 d. there 1781, a Tory it is reported. Wife stated to have been Margaret Bolt. Stone Arabia church records Lutheran have a Maria Margaretha Merckel as godparent in some baptisms. Children: Henrich Jr., Dewald, Richard/Dietrich, Wilhelm (killed at Oriskany, m. Engelge Sutz), others. Please reply to my e-mail address. Thanks, Richard Brenneman.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohlcgs/kirtland/nkirtb0108.html#Index_Markell,_Elizabeth_1\\\About 1816-17 came Thomas Morley, Sr., and his son, Alfred; David Holbrook, Samuel Tomblinson, Amos Wheeler and his sons, David and Samuel; Alfred Witter, John Goodale, Aretas Marble, Henry Markell and his five sons -- John, Peter, Benjamin, Nicholas and James (John was afterward one of the associate judges of Lake county.), Josiah Jones, Robert Blair, Samuel Wilson and others. In 1818 the township settled very rapidly. Card & Holmes built a grist mill at the Flats; James Boyden put up a cloth-dressing and wool-carding establishment; Warren Corning built a distillery and Isaac Chatfield started a blacksmith shop, all within a year or two of that time. Claudius Stanard bought all of the middle tract west of the Chillicothe road and gave farms to his three sons and son- in-law, Jos. Robison, and sold the balance to Reuben Beeman, Edward and Abram Gilleti, Gideon McNutt, Jacob Lafter, and others. But few of their descendants remain in Lake county -- Elijah Smith, Newel K Whitney, Timothy D Martindale, Jason Randall, Jeduthan Ladd, Noah Durrin, Sylvester Russell, A. C. Russell, but I cannot remember them all.
In 1819 there were ninety-seven males that were old enough to vote\\

Lived at Little Mountain, Ohio until 1908. Moved to Perry, OH in the Spring of 1908. Mark Ford Booth recalls that his father made $1.25 a day and got a .25 raise. Three children were living with him at the time - Lotte, Hamilton and Lena - and they all went to Michigan to look for a job in the Detroit, MI area where he eventually settled. At a family gathering 7 July, 1984 at Chardon, OH attended by Wm and Mildred Gaylord; Lyle and Marilyn Writght; Elwood and Adeline Brown; Marilyn and Donald Funk; Glenn Brown and Mark and Lillian Booth, Mark Booth observed that Lyle Wright .looks like his mother Lena, Franklin looks like Mark’s brother Wales, and Elwood looks like Mark’s son, Raymond Booth.

MCWETHY, AMOS Sep. 20, 1808 – Jan. 11, 1884
Amos married Elizabeth Johnson on Sep. 10, 1837 in New York, and they immediately moved to Kirtland. They were parents of five children. Amos is a son of Isaac and Hannah McWethy, members of the early church.
From the Painesville Telegraph – Jan. 17, 1884, p. 3
Still another of the pioneers of Kirtland has departed. How fast they are hurrying on; the time will soon come when the last man who can be called an old settler, an early pioneer, will have passed away. Amos McWethy departed this life on Friday, Jan 1884 at the age of 75 years and one day. Just 24 hours older than his father who died many years before. When he came to Kirtland he was 28 years old and has lived here ever since. He leaves a widow and four children, two sons and two daughters. Thirteen years ago he came in from his farm and gave up work forever. All these long years have been to him one continuous scene of torture, literally no well day with its blessing ever came to him, but the days of intense suffering and anguish were counted by the hundreds. So, he lived and waited, longing for the end. He was preeminently one of the most quiet, and peaceable of men. During these 47 years, no man has ever called his honesty in question. His funeral took place on Sunday, the 13th, at the Baptist Church, Rev. A. P. Buel of Cleveland, officiating. The text of the preacher is found in St. Paul’s 2nd epistle to Timothy 4th chapter and 6th verse: “For I am ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.” From this text was heard a most fervid and eloquent discourse.
Mr. N. Markell took charge of the funeral arrangements. Chester Clapp, Royal Green, Hiram Harmon, Hiram Squares and Bartee Whiting bore his remains to the grave. He died, his last hour lighted up by the full consciousness of a life in the future laid up for him in which there should be no pain, no suffering, no sickness, but perfect joy forevermore.

Met Uncle John Markell Coe (from Ohio, wife Rubie) at a Markell-Booth family reunion in 1881 and went to work on Coe’s ranch in Sloan, Iowa. Worked for him several years as a foreman.
Killed in the Sioux City Milk Wars “ Tension mounted in the area, prompting Sioux City Mayor W. D. Hayes to say, "Sioux City has been the center of a movement that threatens to sweep the middle western states like a prairie fire." And he was right. Violent outbreaks continued, and near Jefferson, R. D. Markell, 67, was fatally shot when he attempted to remove a barricade of telephone poles and spiked wooden planks from the road while his two sons watched from the pickup cab. Markell was attempting to bring 1,000 gallons of milk into Sioux City when the shooting broke out between him and striking farmers.”41 Appears in 1895 Iowa State Census, 29, White race, Residence Salix, Liberty, Woodbury. POLICE ARREST GATE CRASHER
ROY MARTIN, FARMER OF KINGSLEY, TAKEN WITH GUN IN HIS POSSESSION
Police indicated Friday forenoon they will release Roy Martin, 32,
Kingsley, without charge, although he is said to have had a revolver in his
possession Thursday night when arrested at Ninth and Pearl, says the Sioux
City Tribune.
Martin, police said, accompanied a party of about thirty men from
Merrill, Iowa, to Sioux City. The group tried to "crash the gate" at the
night meeting of the Sioux City Milk Producers association in the Armory,
but were turned away.
It was reported they came to Sioux City after attending a brief Farm
Holiday association meeting in Merrill.
When police refused to admit the men to the milk meeting they
congregated in a lunchroom across the street from the Armory. As the milk
meeting adjourned a squad of police entered the lunchroom and proceeded to
"shake down" the group. All were permitted to leave after being "frisked"
except Martin, who was taken to the police station.
Martin was one of more than 100 men arrested last May when the Iowa
National Guard occupied Plymouth county under martial law. The troopers
later released Martin without charge.
Questioned by police and Sheriff Ralph E. Rippey, of Plymouth county [Chicoine was the sheriff in Union County?],
Martin is said to have admitted a scar over his eye is the mark of gun
wounds received in the highway battle just west of Sioux City last February
3, in which R. D. Markell, milk trucker, was fatally wounded.
A charge of carrying a concealed weapon was filed by police against Ray
Martin, 30, of Kingsley, who was arrested at the Armory after police found a
revolver in his possession. Martin was arrested during a meeting of the
Milk Producers Association.

He was preceeded in death by his wife Maxine Ruth Pike Markell, parents Ruel DeWitt and Mabel "Belle" Bigelow Markell, older brothers Frank and Harry Markell, a younger brother Keats Coe Markell, and infant sister. His daughters Arden Ann McLaughlin and Alice Kay Markell Plager Dyslin also preceded him in death.
Warren, as he was known to family and friends throughout his life, was born in Salix, Iowa on September 20, 1902, the third of five children. He grew up on farms in Salix and Oto, Iowa and in Wessington Springs and Elk Point, South Dakota. Warren worked in many family enterprises including farming, livestock and milk drayage. He was the only one of his brothers who was not present when the family milk truck was ambushed during South Dakota’s Milk Wars; his father, R.D. Markell, was killed in the attack and his brothers were all injured. Warren was eager to see the world riding the rails, working in threshing crews as well as becoming one of the first paper products salesmen for the Fort Howard Paper Company. During Prohibition he worked briefly for Al Capone, delivering liquor from Chicago to Sioux City, IA. A handsome man and an immaculate dresser, he was said to have been mistaken for the famous outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd on several occasions.
After marrying Maxine Pike in 1929 and working in livestock sales in Salix and Thief River Falls, MN, he found employment with a Sioux City firm that made parts for the new aerospace industry. When WWII broke out, Warren and his family moved to work for Lockheed in Glendale, California. Shortly after arrival in 1941, he was mistakenly diagnosed with a fatal heart ailment and sent home to Sioux City to spend what were assumed to be his few remaining months. The family later moved to Rockford, IL, where Warren was employed by Barber Colman for many years. After a short time selling cars for American Motors, Warren and Maxine retired to a farm in rural Harrison, IL, where he raised sheep. After his wife became ill, they moved to Rockton, IL, in 1971 and remained there until her death in 1978.
At the age of 76, when most of his contemporaries were very much retired, Warren relocated to Berkeley, CA, and embarked on a successful new career as the manager of a large apartment complex. He remained there until moving to Clear Lake, IA, with his second wife, the former Alpha Ritter in 1983. Faced with increasing ill health, he then moved back to Rockton, IL, to live with his daughter Ora until his condition precluded care in the family home.
Warren was a good husband, a loving father and grandfather and a kind and faithful friend. He was known for his wonderful storytelling, his fine voice and natural musical ability, his love of animals and cribbage, and his warm and friendly manner, which won him friends easily. He took each day as it came and seldom worried about the future. He came from a line of longevity: both of his grandfathers lived to be 86 and 94 years of age. Warren attributed his own longevity neither to genetics or clean living, but to having enjoyed the care and love of good women. He is loved and missed by all who were privileged to know him.
Warren will be not be buried in the Markell family plot in Graceland Cemetery in Sioux City, but in Willwood Cemetery in Rockford, IL, beside his wife Maxine and daughter Arden. A private graveside service will be held for the family.

As a 14-15 y/o girl, Marybelle was strong enough to do haying on the Markell property in Salix down by the river (former Bigelow land). She worked with the Sandersons, Mabel and her boy Art, “Fats”, friends of the family. She was able to “buck” or round off the top of the haystacks by herself.

SALIX, Iowa -- Mary Belle (Markell) Rogers, 81, of Spokane, Wash., formerly of Salix, Iowa, died peacefully Thursday, Nov. 23, 2006, at St. Joseph Care Center in Spokane after a brief but courageous battle with an undiagnosed malady.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday (time of mass pending) at Sacred Heart Church, 219 E. Rockwood Boulevard, Spokane, Wash. Memorial services will be 12:10 p.m. Thursday at St. Matthew's Church in Kalispell, Mont. Entombment will be in Glacier Memorial Cemetery, Kalispell. Arrangements are under the direction of Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home in Spokane.
Mary Belle was born May 9, 1925, at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City. She was the only child of Frank R. and Louise Margaret (Hildebrand) Markell. Mary Belle was the namesake of her maternal and paternal grandmothers, Mary and Belle. Her youth was spent in the farming community of Salix. She would often discuss life during the Depression era of rural Iowa, where her grandparents had emigrated and her parents engaged in farming, milk production and even "bootlegging," as she would tell. She spent much of her time swimming in Brown's Lake inside her grandfather, Tinkum Bigelow's donated parkland under the watchful eye of one of her Dalmatian dogs.
She was admitted directly into Briar Cliff College in Sioux City after her junior year at St. Joseph School in Salix under the then experimental Hutchinson Plan. After two years studying parks and recreation, she pursued a career that combined her passion for swimming and her gregarious nature taking a job with the Red Cross of Omaha, and the beginning of an extensive career, volunteer and state board member involved primarily with water safety and first aid, lasting more than 57 years until 2004 in Nebraska, Illinois and Montana.
She remained involved with her college studies as a board member and committee chair of the Illinois Association of Parks and Recreation and the Community House in St. Charles, Ill. She was actively involved with the Delnor Hospital Auxiliary, Marmion Military Academy's Mothers Association and the Pottawattamie Garden Club while residing in the Fox River Valley of Illinois. She once again pursued her passions in recreation and water safety running the family-owned KOA franchise on Montana’s Flathead Lake during the summertime for almost 30 years.
She provided unconditional support to her husband of 54 years, Logan, moving from Illinois to Idaho, Montana and finally Spokane, while maintaining her interests in Red Cross and recreation. She was devout in her faith, a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and remarkable conversationalist.
Survivors include her husband, J. Logan Rogers, MD; a son and only child, John Logan Rogers II and his wife, Judy Long Rogers; her only grandson, John Logan Rogers III; as well as numerous cousins in Iowa, Illinois, Colorado and Washington.
Donations may be made in her name to your local Chapter of the American National Red Cross or the charity of your choice.

Harry Markell, son of R. D. Markell, jumped from the Omaha fast train as
it passed through Hinton Saturday noon striking on his hands. Both
wrists were sprained and his hands were so badly cut and lacerated as to
require the service of a physician. He was taken to the office of Dr.
Robbins where his injuries were dressed and he will probably receive no
permanent injury.

Family nickname was “Runt”, as he was the youngest in the family, and “Unk” as an older man. Had a lifelong interest in dogs and horses. Swapped a violin that his mother had bought him, in hopes of encouraging his musical talents, for a puppy. Unk always thought he got the best part of the deal on that one. Had a football scholarship to the University of Nebraska in 1929, but came back to work with his folks on the farm, as hard times had set in. Later went to work in the steel mills in Colorado, where he met his wife Josephine and had his first daughter, Ruella. The marriage didn’t last, but they stayed in contact. Later, caught philandering with the sheriff’s wife, and given the option of serving time in that sheriff’s jail, or enlisting in the army, Unk headed off to war at the age of 32, about 10 years older than most of his fellow soldiers. He fought in WWII, first at the Battle of the Bulge. With the majority of his company dead, Unk was scheduled to go out with another, when, at the reployment depot, he heard his name over the loudspeaker. Turns out that a high school buddy turned officer recognized his name and they went out for a beer. Upon return, the duty officer was fighting mad and demanded to know why Unk was AWOL and wanted him thrown in the stockade. The officer friend calmed him down and explained what had happened and it was arranged for Unk to go with another unit later. A short time after that, the news came that the original until with which Unk should have been sent had been strafed and that there were no survivors of the attack.. Unk said his life was saved by a beer. As it would turn out, the same fellow who recognized Unk would later be liberated by him from Buchenwald, where he was held as a POW.
Unk served under Patton , primarily as a sniper. Liberated Buchenwald. Had an exterminating service in Shirland, Winnebago, Illinois whereby the nickname “Mousy” Markell. He raised and fought fighting cocks, as well as cutting horses. In his late 70’s he moved to Firesteel to raise wheat, which is where is wife “Toddy” died. As “Unk” himself put it, “I came down in the morning and there was Toddy on the kitchen floor, deader than hell. Had to step over her to make the coffee.” Social Security Card issued in California.

As it was, there was a loss to many of the last holders, but nothing in proportion to what the people suffered from other banks. And but for the assistant cashier's violation of his instructions during the absence of the cashier, Joseph Smith, to the New England states, it is quite probable that the Kirtland bank would have survived the terrible times of 1836 and '7. Benjamin Markell, a resident of Kirtland at the time -- not a Latter Day Saint -- a man of means and business, gave his evidence on November 29, 1884, upon this as follows:
"I was acquainted with old father Smith's whole family. Knew Joseph, Hyrum, Carlos, William, and all the rest who came here. There were two young women in the family. I was well acquainted with them. They were nice girls. Hyrum was, I always thought, a very exemplary man. William was more fond of fun and sport. I dealt with Joseph Smith when he lived here. At one time I loaned him about $200 in money. He paid me as he agreed. At different other times I loaned him small sums; he always paid me and acted honorably. I believe the Smith family would do right and deal honorably if they were treated properly. They were pitched into by others on account of their religion. The Kirtland bank, in my judgment, failed on account of mismanagement, trusting of incompetent men to do the business together with the hard times coming on. I did not attribute it to the dishonesty of the parties."
