Obituary:

Kenneth William Lewis passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2007, at Enloe Hospital from Leukemia after a 3 ? year fight with several blood disorders. Ken was born in Chico on January 31, 1956, to Fred & Dollie Lewis.

Ken Lewis is the great-grandson of early settlers to Paradise, California. His great-grandparents, William & Katherine Lewis arrived to the Paradise area in the early 1900's to set up their almond orchard and raise a family on Neal Road acreage, west of Lewis Ranch Road. Ken grew up in Butte County in Richvale, CA, living in the CDF fire station with his parents. His father was the resident engineer during Ken's childhood. He attended and graduated from Richvale Elementary School and then from Biggs High School.

On April 1, 2001, Ken and Lorraine Parcell, of Orland, were married and Ken was welcomed into a ready-made family. With a creative mind and crafty hands, Ken's mechanical abilities took him into his chosen trade of welding and fabrication building mostly farm equipment and implements and race cars. Dirt Track Racing was Ken's love and he was a champion in the mini-stock division at the Orland Raceway for the years 1998, 2000, 2004 and 2005. His other hobby was his interest in trains, old and new. Ken was employed at Weiss McNair Ramacher in Chico.

His survivors include his wife, Lorraine, of Orland, his mother, Dollie Lewis, of Paradise, his step-children, Anthony, of Orland, Elizabeth, of Concord, Christine, of San Diego and Dianna, of Orland, step-grandchild, Hank, his aunt, Frances Ramirez, of Chico, his aunt, Myrna Culley, of Anderson, his uncle, Marvin Lewis, of Loomis and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Lewis.

Ken will be remembered most for his willingness to help others, his love for children, his attitude about life and his winning ways. Ken was a fierce competitor who was known to loan or give parts to racers he raced against or help them repair their cars just to keep enough cars on the track on a race night. His reputation is that of a good, clean competitor who never won unfairly. Along with his racing expertise, Ken became a role model in the Orland area. He was invited and appeared with his race car several times at the elementary school to speak with the children about auto racing and his race car. Children were always crowded around him Saturday nights following the races to speak with him and to get autographs. He will be missed by all that have ever had the opportunity to love him or know him.

His family extends an invitation to you to join them in A Celebration of Life for Ken to be held at the Glenn County Fairgrounds, in the "Cafeteria Building," on Saturday, January 27, 2007, at 2 p.m.

The American fraternal benefit network began with the organization the Ancient Order of United Workmen in Meadville, Pennsylvania on October 27, 1868. The AOUW was founded by John Jordan Upchurch, a Mason, with the aim of adjusting "all differences which may arise between employers and employees, and to labor for the development of a plan of action that may be beneficial to both parties, based on the eternal truth that the interests of labor and capitol are equal and should receive equal protection." Each member paid $1 into the insurance fund to cover the sum of not less than $500 in benefits paid to a members dependents when he died. Each time a member died, $1 was due from the surviving members to reestablish the fund. Fraternal benefits societies soon became quite popular as a means of providing financial protection to working class people at an affordable rate. Additionally, Fraternal benefits societies typically maintained a lodge where members could meet together in a spirit of fraternalism and brotherhood. In at least one case - the Populist movement - the fraternity evolved into a powerful political organization providing a voice for their members.
Although John Upchurch did not intentionally seek to establish a new system of insurance, the seed of his original idea was in fact planted. The crux of Upchurch's ideology was to "bring together then conflicting social interests, capitol and labor, to provide a means of arbitration with which to settle difficulties that were constantly arising." However, that seed, once planted grew into the tree of mutual protection, "under whose shelter millions today rest in security from want and dependence."
The emblems and symbols used by the AOUW are steeped in Masonic attributes, featuring the All-Seeing Eye, the Holy Bible, Anchor and Square and Compasses, over which the motto "Charity, Hope and Protection" are displayed. It even boasts of having three independent degrees as a rite of passage into the order. Its membership numbered in excess of 318,000 in 1895.
Quoted from an excerpt of a lecture given by Upchurch defining the AOUW, the pervasiveness of the tenets of Masonry are easily recognized, when he said, "Today we have members from the highest professions and the lowest grades of mechanical labor. We come into this organization on the same great level. It is not money, but it is purity of character and uprightness that brings us here, and we can take each brother by the hand as an equal. Brothers, in this organization we have done more to harmonize the human family, high and low, than all the other organizations that ever existed."

...I was working for John Mercado, who was progressive, too. He knew Bill Proetz [1] at that time, pretty well. John was admired by a lot of people. I told him about the canine dogs and I said, "You know, we should talk to the chief, maybe we'll get a dog or two." So, Mercado went to Proetz.
KC: Proetz was the chief?
LM: Bill Proetz, yeah. Bill Proetz thought it was a good idea, he said, "Why don't you call this Al Johnson, we'll take him to lunch." So, we met for lunch one day. Al Johnson told the chief, he said, "You know, your officers will need more training than the dogs." I thought, oh, boy, here we go. He said, "If you select a couple officers, I'll pick the dogs, but we're going to have donated dogs I suppose because we didn't have any money." We found three dogs that he approved of. I was one of the people, Ed Buehlman was the other, and Bill Swiger [2]. We were all from Mercado's tactical unit. We began training with Al Johnson and his partner Bob Gates, both of them were recognized obedience dog trainers here in the Twin Cities.
[1] William F. Proetz was appointed patrolman March 1, 1937; promoted to sergeant March 16, 1968, detective September 20, 1948, lieutenant December 1949, and chief March 11, 1955; and retired June 12, 1963.15
